How Can Different Vehicles Be Loaded Together?

Gasoline and diesel vehicles, non-plug-in hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles can follow different declaration, documentation and carrier-acceptance rules. Battery chemistry and state may also matter.

IMDG Code Amendment 42-24 is mandatory from 1 January 2026. Some carriers publish conditions under which used electric vehicles may be accepted, while others prohibit used lithium-battery-powered EVs. Vehicle age, battery condition, survey requirements, letters of indemnity, state of charge and route can all matter.

Non-Running, Damaged or Flooded — What Changes?

Typical situation The vehicle does not run, and another EV has accident damage. Are they treated the same way?
Non-running, physically damaged and battery-risk vehicles are different logistics categories

A vehicle can be non-running because of a mechanical problem and still be otherwise undamaged. Accident damage can affect towing, steering, brakes, leakage or structural integrity. Battery damage, fire history or flood / water exposure can create a separate and much stricter carrier-acceptance issue for EVs and hybrids.

Why Can One Carrier Accept a Vehicle That Another Rejects?

IMDG requirements and carrier house rules are not the same thing

The IMDG Code provides the international dangerous-goods framework. Individual shipping lines may add their own acceptance, documentation, stowage, vehicle-age, survey, battery-condition or route restrictions. The actual vessel operator can also matter on partner-operated services.

Can Vehicles and General Cargo Be Loaded Together?

Japan Vehicle Container Shipping FAQ

How many cars can fit in a 40ft container?

There is no reliable fixed answer based only on container size. The actual number depends on the dimensions, weight, wheelbase and ground clearance of each vehicle, whether an elevated or inclined loading arrangement is used, and the specialist vanning plan.

Can several different vehicles be loaded in one container?

Potentially yes. Sedans, SUVs, vans or other vehicles may be combined where their dimensions, weights and loading geometry allow a safe vanning and securing plan. The vehicle combination should be reviewed before the container quantity is confirmed.

Can a non-running vehicle be shipped from Japan in a container?

Potentially yes. The loading plan needs to consider steering, brakes, wheel condition, fluid leakage, access for winching or towing and the actual condition of the vehicle. Carrier restrictions may also apply to damaged or battery-powered vehicles.

Can damaged vehicles be shipped in a container?

It depends on the type of damage, loading feasibility, leakage risk, propulsion system and carrier policy. Battery, fire or flood damage can create much stricter acceptance issues than normal cosmetic body damage.

Can used electric vehicles be shipped from Japan by container?

Potentially, but carrier policies differ significantly. Vehicle age, battery type, battery condition, accident history, state of charge, required dangerous-goods documentation, route and vessel operator can affect acceptance. Carrier approval should be checked before the shipment is finalized.

Why can one shipping line accept an EV that another shipping line rejects?

The IMDG Code provides the international dangerous-goods framework, but shipping lines can apply additional carrier house rules. New or used status, battery chemistry, damage history, vehicle age, documents, stowage requirements, route and actual vessel operator can therefore lead to different acceptance results.

Can cars purchased from different sellers in Japan be shipped together?

Potentially yes. Vehicles can be collected from different auctions, dealers or suppliers and brought to a suitable yard for temporary storage, document checking, consolidation and container vanning before export.

Can spare parts be shipped in the same container as vehicles?

Potentially yes, subject to the type of parts, packing, securing, customs declaration, dangerous-goods status, available space and carrier acceptance. Loose parts should not simply be placed inside vehicles without reviewing the shipment requirements.

Can engines be shipped in the same container as cars?

Potentially, but the engine condition, residual fuel or oil, packing, securing, declaration and carrier requirements need to be checked. Used engines should not automatically be treated as ordinary dry cargo.

Can vehicles and machinery be shipped in the same container?

Potentially yes if the complete loading plan works. Vehicle positioning, machinery packing, total weight, securing, customs declaration, dangerous-goods status and carrier acceptance all need to be reviewed together.

Do all cars need to be at the same place before booking?

Not necessarily. Vehicles can be located at different sellers or auctions, but the pickup and consolidation plan should be clear enough to estimate when all vehicles can reach the vanning yard and when the complete container can be loaded.

Does Gemslinks perform the vehicle vanning itself?

Gemslinks coordinates the required Japan-side shipment and can arrange specialist vehicle-vanning partners according to the actual project. The loading configuration and physical securing should be carried out by an operator experienced with the relevant vehicle and container arrangement.

Can Gemslinks arrange vehicle pickup from Japanese auctions or dealers?

The Japan-side scope can include coordinating vehicle collection from auctions, dealers, suppliers or other agreed handover points and bringing the vehicles to the selected consolidation / vanning location.

Can Gemslinks arrange export customs clearance?

Export customs handling can be included in the Japan-side shipment scope where the required vehicle, exporter and supporting documentation conditions are in place.

What information is needed to quote vehicle container shipping from Japan?

Send the make and model, dimensions, weight, running condition, propulsion type, current location in Japan and destination for each vehicle. Also provide any spare parts or other cargo to be loaded, the cargo-ready timing and the required shipping scope.

When does container shipping make more sense than RoRo?

Container shipping becomes especially relevant when several vehicles need to move together, vehicles are being consolidated from different sellers, spare parts or other cargo will travel in the same shipment, enclosed loading is preferred, or the vehicle / route does not fit a simple RoRo movement. The choice should still be based on the actual vehicles, destination and total logistics cost rather than assuming one method is always better.
